On a recent service call for a leaking dishwasher, a repair tech spared a few minutes to educate a client and I. Turns out, most of the dishwasher leaks that he services are due to overuse of detergent. But how do you overuse 1 pod? Well, 1 pod = 3 tablespoons of concentrated detergent. According to him, that concentrate is equivalent to 15 tablespoons of an average soap. If you pre rinse your dishes, the recommended amount of detergent you should use is 1 tablespoon. The volume in a pod is based on worst case conditions. Poor water quality and a full load of dirty dishes. Not drinkable tap water or pre rinsed dishes. So... extra soap is good right? Extra clean?

NOT!! That extra soap is not only destroying the parts in your unit, but also getting baked onto your dishes and glasses before it’s had a chance to rinse off.

Want to see if you’ve been eating soap? Run a

wash cycle like you normally do. Then, leave the dishes inside and run it again, this time without adding detergent. 5 minutes into your cycle, open the door and take a look at all of the suds at the bottom. All from your “clean” dishes. YIKES. If it makes you feel any better, I’ve been eating soap too.

Not only is the excess detergent bad for your health, but your appliance as well. But good for Alan at Stone Appliance Repair I guess.

Though it’s been bouncing around for years, it seems as of late, there has been more conversation regarding the potential Ninigret Park renovation in Charlestown. The current 4 phase plan, estimated to cost over 39 million will likely get slimmed down significantly before any real progress is made. Still, this rough plan (left) that’s likely outdated and inaccurate, sure did get a lot of people riled up on Facebook. Either way, Coastal Caretaking is here to let you know that if the renovation does go through, avoid swimming in the pond. They used to bathe the circus animals in there.
